The Long Night of Science (LNDW) will take place on Saturday, June 22, 2024. From 5 p.m. to midnight, scientific and science-related institutions in Berlin invite visitors to take a look behind the scenes and experience science and research first-hand.

The Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute (HHI) is taking part in LNDW 2024. Visitors will gain insights into our current research.

Terahertz imaging

We will present a live demonstrator on the subject of imaging in the terahertz frequency range. Experience how terahertz radiation in the optical range penetrates opaque materials and how hidden structures can be visualized in this way.

Layer thickness measurement with terahertz

Our live demonstrator on "Coating thickness measurement using terahertz radiation" will illustrate how high-precision terahertz measurement technology can be used to non-destructively determine coating thicknesses in the µm range.

Fiber optics over and back

Fiber optic internet you can touch: How does the light get into the optical fiber and where does it go? Explore the simplest elements of the Internet of the future and try your hand at tasks that present engineers with everyday challenges.

The polarization state of light is shown in the Poincaré sphere. Move around this Poincaré sphere in a playful and almost child's play way, just like in the classic game Snaké, and get a feel for laboratory work in the field of optical communications engineering.

Data transfer with LiFi

LiFi (Light Fidelity) is a technology that enables wireless data transmission using light. We will demonstrate how a LiFi system works and in which application scenarios LiFi can be a powerful alternative to Wi-Fi. LiFi is used as a supplement to radio, especially where there is a higher user density and more capacity is required.

The future mobile communications standard 6G is currently being developed and is expected to be ready in 2030. We will show you a first application of 6G.  Join us as we control robotic dogs using 6G wireless mobile networks.

How does AI make decisions?

Explainable AI: How does an AI model come to a decision? In this demo, we take a look inside artificial neural networks and examine the functions of individual, relevant components. In doing so, we understand the criteria used by the AI to make a decision.

Fruit detection with AI

How can AI help to recognize fruits and plants and thus promote sustainable agriculture? We present our AI-supported fruit and plant recognition in an interactive demonstrator, which is already being used in fields.

Event based structured light

We demonstrate a new super-fast camera technology that is coupled with a laser scanner to enable spatial augmented reality in real time.

 

AI-based AR support

We will show you how AI-based image analysis can be used in the construction industry to create 3D models from floor plans of buildings. You will also see what assembly support based on augmented reality can look like.

 

Medical Laboratory

We would like to introduce you to our state-of-the-art medical laboratory. It uses image-based medical systems that provide support during operations. We will also show you the systems we use to implement AI-based surgical planning and analysis.

Dynamic Exposure Visualization App

Introducing our mobile app DEVA. It is able to measure environmental information such as air pollution and traffic information recorded by public sensors and then visualize it using augmented reality.

Virtual Reality Experience

We present our virtual reality projects with Holocaust survivors Ernst Grube and Eva Umlauf. We recorded the survivors using volumetric video technology to create a lifelike 3D representation. The resulting volumetric video is a walk-through film in which the survivors describe their experiences during National Socialism.

Volumetric Video Streaming

Showcasing an interactive, high-quality volumetric video streaming for cloud-based mixed reality over 5G. The interactive XR experience shows a photorealistic volumetric representation of humans. As the user moves around the scene, the virtual human follows the user with their head, giving the impression of real interaction. The virtual human is animated in real time using AI-based techniques that apply media patterns retrieved from a remote device to generate facial expressions.
